Early-Winter Night

by Katherine Steiger

A dense fiancé
in a poppy-eyed dress
flutters about a room
in a town, where
even on your death-bed
you’ll have never heard of.
She’s the spring
that came before
and will follow after
your time
among all this.

Turning over
doesn’t help now.
But the thought of sleeping
at the foot of the bed
somehow does.
